Riding, it took only two days to reach the outer edge of the forest; each morning when Shadow awakened, the stag would be there waiting. It did not leave until noon of the third day, when Shadow glimpsed Allanmere through the thin veil of the forest's edge. Shadow sent it on its way with an affectionate

grin, shouldered her pack, sighed happily, and set her feet on the road.

Shadow debated several possible courses, then settled on sneaking into the city in a farmer's wagon. She made her way cautiously to Argent's shop, avoiding the main roads, and used the bracelet to enter the store by way of the back door.

Argent was out front, dealing with a customer by the sound of it. Shadow sat down at his desk, putting her feet up, and lit a pipe of dreamweed while she waited.

After a few minutes the bargain ended (Shadow grinned; she could've talked Argent down another ten Moons), and Argent came back, sniffing the air puzzledly. He started violently when he saw Shadow.

"By leaf and tree, do you drop out of the air now?" He chuckled weakly.

"No, I just sneak in by the back door." Shadow laughed. "I hope you don't mind just this once."

"Not at all." He gazed rather sternly, however, at Shadow's feet on his desk; Shadow grinned innocently, but took them down.

"But where have you been?" Argent continued. "I've been looking for you for days, and Donya's been here a dozen times if once."
